Who makes it
Powderline is designed, programmed and run by one independent developer, somewhere the season is short and the snow is often more ice than powder. The game grew out of wanting a run that never ends and a trick system that behaves like a board, not like a button.
It is a one-person project, updated in small steps and steered by the people who play it. Every bug report and idea sent through the in-game feedback box is read by the person who wrote the code, and a report that leads to a fix earns the reporter 200 coins.
How it is built
The whole game is about two megabytes. It renders with three.js on WebGL, with a procedural mountain generated from layered noise, so the slope never repeats and any two players asked for the same coordinates get the identical terrain — which is what makes peer-to-peer racing possible. Races connect the two browsers directly over WebRTC; there is no game server in the middle.
Rider accounts, quests, the leaderboard and the wheel live on a Supabase backend hosted in Frankfurt. The rules that matter — coin payouts, drop odds, quest validation — are enforced on the server, so nobody can mint coins by editing their browser. Development happens against a separate self-hosted copy of that backend, so testing never touches real riders' data.
The rider, the trees, rocks and rails are low-poly models; the sound is synthesised in the browser from noise and oscillators — there are no audio files. Third-party assets are credited in the project's CREDITS file.
What it costs
Nothing. Powderline is free to play with no account required. An optional account saves your progress across devices. Coins for the prize wheel are earned by clearing quests; if you would rather not grind, coin packs can be bought in the shop, and the odds on the wheel are published there and are the same for everyone. Cosmetics are purely visual — nothing you can buy makes the board ride differently.
What keeps it free is advertising on this website: the content pages — this one, the guides, the updates — carry Google AdSense and show ads once Google has approved the site. The game itself shows none during a run. If rewarded video ads for free wheel spins are ever switched on in the shop they will be strictly opt-in, watched only when you press the button, and the privacy policy explains the consent you are asked for in the EEA before any ad can use cookies.
